Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program wrapped up the Lion Classic with a sweep over Rockhurst, winning 10-2 in the opener and 4-0 in game two today inside the Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
The Lions (11-7) secured the 10-2 run rule victory in game one to begin their day.
Kara Amos picked up her fourth win of the season throwing five innings of work and from the plate went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
In the first inning Rockhurst (4-8) got its two runs of the game off a home run to right field but they couldn't hold the Lions down in the bottom half of the inning.
Josie Tofpi began the scoring in the inning with a single to right center to score

Yazmin Vargas before Amos scored Tofpi and
Leighton Withers. Hurst drew a walk with the bases loaded and
Adrianna Young scored off a wild pitch later on in the inning to cement a 6-2 lead after the first inning.
Southern got a run in the third inning off another wild pitch before
Kristen Wade singled home Amos and
Abby DeSanto pinch hitter shot one to left center for a double to score Wade and Young to complete the 10-2 run rule victory.
Game two saw the Lions score early and shutout the Hawks for a 4-0 win as
Bailey Lacy picked up her fourth win of the season throwing seven innings with 10 strikeouts.
Yazmin Vargas scored twice while Tofpi, Withers, Williams and Vargas picked up an RBI.
In the first inning Vargas forced a throwing error by the third baseman off a bunt down the line that allowed
Sidnie Hurst to score after beginning the play at first base. Tofpi hit a sacrifice fly to score Vargas later on in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Withers hit a single to right center that scored Vargas and moved Tofpi over to third who scored on the next at bat thanks to a Williams sacrifice fly to seal the score at 4-0.
Rockhurst couldn't muster anything up in the sixth inning with Lacy striking out the first two before getting a groundout to Withers at first base. In the seventh inning the Hawks lined out to left and then fouled out to right field with
Adrianna Young making a play near the side fencing before Lacy struck out her tenth batter of the game to end it.
Southern begins MIAA action next week with Central Missouri on Friday at 3:00 and 5:00pm approximately and then Lincoln on Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00pm approximately.
