Lions Fall In Extras, 3-2 At Emporia State

Emporia, Kan. – The Missouri Southern Lions dropped the series finale today 3-2 in extra innings to Emporia State.

Southern (18-12, 9-7 MIAA) was led by a 3-for-5 day at the plate from Jordan Fitzpatrick as he had a double. Nate Mieszkowski was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Chayton Beck was 2-for-3 with a run as well. Case Tucker and Henry Kusiak had two hits each with Kusiak driving in a run.

Cole Woods started and went seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out four, while walking none. Cale McCallister and Scott Duensing threw in relief with Duensing picking up the loss in extras.

ESU (11-18, 5-11 MIAA) got two hits from Sam Chaput as Kadyn Williams drove in the winning run in the tenth.

Both teams were scoreless through four innings before the Lions plated a pair in the fifth. Tucker reached on an error, while Beck scored and Kusiak drove home Mieszkowski to give the Lions a 2-0 lead after five.

ESU scored a run in the sixth and another in the eighth to tie the game at two and force extra innings.

The Lions put their first two batters aboard in the tenth after a single from Kusiak and a double from Doran had runners at second and third. Cole Robinson then flew out to right and Kusiak was out, tagging from third, stalling the Lions' rally.

ESU got a two-out double in the bottom half of the inning and Williams came up with the game-winning single in the next at-bat.

Southern will be back in action on Tuesday evening as the Lions play host to Rogers State. First pitch from Warren Turner Field is set for 6 pm.
