Wichita, Kan. – The fourth ranked Missouri Southern women's basketball program ended the week with a dominant performance on the road beating Newman 89-42 inside Fugate Gymnasium today.
The Lions (11-0, 3-0) had all 12 players that saw action today score to mark the second time that has happened this season.
Layne Skiles led the way with 15 points shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from three.
Kryslyn Jones had 13 points shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from three while
Madi Stokes had 12 points shooting 6-of-9 from the field and hauled in seven rebounds and blocked two shots.
Lacy Stokes filled the stat sheet with six assists, six points, five rebounds and four steals and no turnovers in 19 minutes.
Amaya Johns was the leading scorer off the bench with eight points while
Hailey Grant had a bench high seven rebounds and four assists.
Mia Topping chipped in with seven points going 3-of-3 from the field and 1-of-1 from three while also having four assists and four rebounds.
For the Jets (4-5, 1-3 MIAA) Maddie Spagnola was the leading scorer with 14 points and dished out three assists. Britney Ho came into the game as the leading scorer in the MIAA at 19.8 points and the leading rebounder for the team at 6.1 per game but ended with five points making one basket and no rebounds. Kyra Grimshaw had eight points and six rebounds while Amaya Perez led the team with seven rebounds and three steals.
Southern got the scoring started in the early going and broke out an 8-2 run in the first three minutes of the game with a Lacy layup at 7:03 ending the run. The Lions would not be done in the first quarter as they ended the quarter on a 16-8 run highlighted by Skiles converting a layup with 44 seconds left for her ninth points of the game as the Lions went into the second quarter up 24-10.
In the second quarter the Lions scored the first 12 points with a Skiles three at 4:55 ending the run that ultimately was 25-3 over the last 9:08 of game time. Newman got a trio of free throws by Ho in the quarter, a three by Spagnola and a free throw with under a minute by Spagnola to trim the Southern lead to 30 (47-17) heading into the half.
At the half the Lions held the advantage in shooting percentage from the field , threes made, rebounds, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, assists, bench points, blocks, fast break points, steals, points off turnovers, points in the paint and forced 13 turnovers in the first half by the Jets who averaged 19.3 turnovers a game coming in.
The third quarter was another fast start from the Lions with a 14-4 run ending at 5:50 following a
Madi Stokes' layup with Lacy picking up the assist to make it a 40-point game 61-21. Ho would make a layup while Grimshaw made a three and a free throw by a 12-1 run by the Lions to end the quarter made it 73-27 going into the fourth quarter.
Newman jumped out to an 11-1 run to begin the quarter before a
Peyton Mosley three killed the run with 4:12 left in the game. Anjelina Humprhreys converted a free throw at 3:36 to make it the second game this season where all 12 players that played scored with the first occurrence being the Central Christian College game at home on Nov. 26 in the Lions 100-32 win. Southern would end the game on a 8-0 run for the final score of 89-42.
With the win, it is the largest margin of victory in the series against the Jets at 57 beating the previous total of 34 in the Lions 87-53 win inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Nov. 30, 2005. This was the lowest scoring output by the Jets in series history with the previous low being 49 in a 70-49 win inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Dec. 11, 2004 and was the most points scored by the Lions in the series history besting the 88-73 win inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Dec. 27, 2002 in the first game of the series.
Lacy Stokes now has 242 career assists to be 12
th in career assists just one away from tying Linda Catillon (79-83) for 11
th. Lacy now also has 782 career points to rank 34
th in program history passing Vonny Wilson (02-05) today.
Layne Skiles now has 856 career points tied with Aubrie Hallman (03-05) for 26
th in program history.
Madi Stokes now has 801 career points becoming the 31
st Lion in program history to eclipse 800 career points.
Amaya Johns now has 595 career points and is 53
rd in career scoring needing 47 more points to be in the top-50.
