Southern Grounds The Jets, 100-66

Wichita, Kan. – The Missouri Southern men's basketball team scored a season-high 100 points as the Lions took out Newman 100-66 today inside Fugate Gymnasium.
 
Southern (6-4, 2-2 MIAA) was led by Winston Dessesow with 19 points and four assists, while Vinson Sigmon Jr. scored 17 on 7-of-11 from the field adding four assists and four rebounds. Christian Bundy had 16 points and ten rebounds, going 6-of-7 from the field, while Avery Taggart had 12 points and five rebounds and Sam Thompson had 11 points.
 
Newman (4-6, 0-4 MIAA) had three players in double-figures, led by 18 points from Stevie Smith.
 
The Lions started strong out of the gate as Taggart knocked down what would be four long-range bombs for Southern in the first four minutes. A layup from Sam Thompson at the 14:15 mark put the Lions up 18-5 and forced a timeout for the Jets.
 
A layup from Sigmon pushed the Southern lead to 14 at 26-12 with 10:26 to go in the half and a jam from Christian Bundy with seven minutes to go put the Lions up 32-16. Another bucket from Bundy gave the Lions a 20-point lead as Southern led 36-16 with 5:36 to go. A three from Bundy pushed the lead to 21 at 46-25 with 2:30 to go in the half and Southern led 49-31 at the break.
 
The Lions shot 56 percent from the field in the first half and 41 percent from long-range, while out rebounding the Jets 20-11.
 
Bundy started the scoring in the second half with a three and a dunk from him with 16:48 to go pushed the Southern lead to 58-33. A jumper from Sigmon with 13:33 on the clock ran the Lions' run to start the half to 18-3 and Southern led 67-34.
 
A three from Thompson with 10:34 to go gave the Lions a 73-39 lead and Southern cruised down the stretch.
 
The Lions out rebounded the Jets 42-20 and held a 13-9 advantage on the offensive boards. Southern dished out 20 assists on 31 made baskets, while shooting 62 percent from the field and 51 percent from long-range.
 
Up next for the Green and Gold will be a Tuesday night matchup with Central Missouri. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is set for 7:30 pm.
