Volleyball Splits On Opening Day At Drury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Springfield, Mo. – The Missouri Southern volleyball team opened up the 2021 season with a split today in Springfield, sweeping LeMoyne-Owen College in the opener, but falling three sets to none to Henderson State in the second match of the day. The day also saw a school-record fall.
 
The Lions (1-1) opened up the tournament with a three set to none sweep over LeMoyne-Owen College (0-2). Individual set scores were 25-5, 25-18 and 25-11.
 
In the opening set, Kylah Carter and Bonnie Hegarty had three kills each to lead the Lions to the victory. There were just two tied scores and only one lead change in the set.
 
Set two was tighter, but saw the Lions rally to take a 2-0 lead. Hegarty had three kills in the set to give her six going into the final set. In the finale, the Lions dominated again, leading for the majority of the set.
 
Hegarty led the Lions in the match with 11 kills and a .846 hitting percentage which broke a Missouri Southern record for a three-set match. The mark tops the previous mark (.838) held by Brittany Vavao-Huggins set in 2008 against Nebraska-Omaha.
 
 Kierson Maydew had eight kills and three blocks, while Carter finished with seven kills, four aces and six digs. Grace Quiroz had 13 assists, while Sophie Mader finished with 12 of her own. CC Pollard had five kills and a team-high ten digs.
 
In the second match of the day, the Lions fell in straight sets to Henderson State (2-0). Individual set scores were 13-25, 22-25 and 20-25.
 
Set one was all Henderson State. The Lady Reddies hit .379 and took the opening set. The two teams traded points until HSU broke open a 9-5 lead. The Lions got within a point at 9-8, but HSU went on a 5-1 run to lead 14-9. Southern scored two-straight to get within three (14-11), but the Lady Reddies went on a 9-0 run to lead 23-11 and put the set out of reach.
 
Set two was back and forth with the largest lead for either team at five midway through. The Lions got within two points (19-17) and tied the set at 21, but HSU scored four of the next five points to take the set.
 
The final set saw Henderson State open up a 15-5 lead midway through, but the Lions went on a 14-7 run to get within three (22-19) late. Henderson State, however, closed out the match on a 3-1 run.
 
Pollard led the Lions with nine kills and five digs. Maydew had six kills, while Mader dished out 15 assists and had seven digs. McCain also had seven digs, while Maydew added four blocks.
 
Southern will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of matches against Drury and Texas Woman's.
