Extra-Inning Heroics Lift No. 20 Lions Over Northwest Missouri, 6-5

Maryville, Mo. – A home run from Henry Kusiak tied it in the ninth and back-to-back doubles from Troy Gagan and Tommy Stevenson sent the fans home happy as the 20th-ranked Missouri Southern baseball team completed the sweep of Northwest Missouri, winning 6-5 in 11 innings today.

The Lions (27-10, 20-10 MIAA) got on top first with a run in the second on an RBI from Ryan Hunter. Joe Kinder hit his 13th home run of the season in the fourth to make the score 2-0, but the Bearcats (13-23, 11-19 MIAA) tied it up with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Jordan Fitzpatrick got the Lions back on top in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, scoring Brad Willis, but Northwest again answered, this time with three runs to go up 5-3 after seven.

Hunter picked up his second RBI of the game in the eighth on a single that scored Dexter Swims and the Lions had the bases loaded but couldn't push across any more runs.

The Lions were down to their last at bat in the ninth when Henry Kusiak deposited the ball over the left field fence to tie the game at five.

Both teams remained scoreless until the 11th when Gagan and Stevenson had back-to-back doubles to score Gagan for the go-ahead run.

Kusiak and Kinder had homers, while Gagan, Stevenson, Clay Milas and Brad Willis had two hits each. Hunter drove in two runs, while Swims scored a pair of runs.

Jacob Davis started for the Lions and went three and two thirds of an inning. Corey Cowan, Cole Woods and Logan VanWey threw in relief through the eighth inning. Scott Duensing threw the ninth and tenth innings allowing just one hit to pick up the win and move to 3-3 on the season, while Ryan Paschal threw a perfect 11th inning to get save number 1 on the season.

The Lions will conclude the regular-season next weekend when the Lions play host to Rogers State.
