Pittsburg, Kan. – The eighth-ranked Missouri Southern baseball team fell 8-7 in the series finale today to Pittsburg State at Al Ortalani Field.
Southern (24-10, 17-10 MIAA) got a 3-for-5 day at the plate from
Jordan Fitzpatrick as he had an RBI and two runs scored.
Tommy Stevenson had a grand slam, while
Ryan Hunter and
Henry Kusiak had an RBI double each.
Dexter Swims had two hits, while
Troy Gagan and
Clay Milas added a hit each.
Corey Cowan started and went four innings, striking out five and walking just one.
Chase Beiter,
Jacob Davis and
Ryan Paschal threw in relief.
The Gorillas (22-11, 17-10 MIAA) got on board first with a three-run home run in the second. The Lions answered back with a pair of homers from Fitzpatrick and Hunter in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.
Pitt scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 8-2.
The Lions answered back with five runs in the seventh when Stevenson hit a grand slam and Fitzpatrick and Kusiak hit back-to-back doubles. The grand slam was the third of the season for Stevenson.
Southern will be back in action next weekend when the Lions travel to Northwest Missouri for a three-game set with the Bearcats. The Lions will play two games on Saturday at noon and a single game on Sunday at 1 pm.
