Softball Sweeps Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Southern softball program achieved a sweep of Nebraska – Kearney today on the road winning 5-4 and 6-1 in MIAA play.
 
Southern (14-10, 5-3 MIAA) won game one 5-4 as Abby Atkin picked up her seventh win of the season. 
 
Leighton Withers got the first run on the board for the Lions off a delayed steal in the second inning. Nebraska – Kearney (10-16, 1-9 MIAA) responded with a run in the third tying it at 1-1 until the fifth inning. In the fifth inning the Lions scored a run from an error before a two-RBI single by Makaila Leonhart and an RBI single by Josie Tofpi pushed the lead up to 5-1. 
 
In the sixth inning the Lopers scored three runs before the Lions held them scoreless in the seventh to secure the win. Leonhart finished 3-od-3 with 2 RBIs, Adrianna Young went 2-of-2 scoring once and Atkin pitched 6.2 innings striking out four. 
 
Game two saw the Lions and Lopers score in the first inning, as Leonhart scored off a passes ball. Kara Amos hit an RBI single scoring Leonhart to begin the third inning scoring for Southern, and Josie Tofpi scored on a dropped fly ball from the pitcher pushing the lead to 3-1. 
 
Leonhart capped off her day with a two-run home run in the fourth inning, her second home run of the season and Tofpi scored in the seventh off an error by the shortstop as the Lions won 6-1.
 
Leonhart went 1-of-3 scoring three runs and having 2 RBIs, Tofpi was 2-of-3 scoring twice and Amos was 2-of-3. Lacy picked up her third win of the season going seven innings, striking out eight and allowing only four hits and one walk. 
 
Next up is Fort Hays State in a MIAA double-header tomorrow, first pitch from Tiger Stadium is set for 12 pm.
