Joplin, Mo. -- The ninth-ranked Missouri Southern baseball team kept coming back and got the final say today as
Henry Kusiak sent the Lions and the fans home happy, hitting an opposite-field walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 10-9 win over Northeastern State.
The Lions (24-7, 17-7 MIAA) got three home runs in the game and each one of them was important. NSU (20-10, 17-7 MIAA) went up 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning when
Joe Kinder hit a home run to left center to get the Lions on the board and cut the lead to 3-1.
Matt Miller added a two-RBI single to right field in the inning to tie the game at three after two.
NSU went back up 5-3 with a pair of runs in the third, before a two-RBI triple from
Ryan Hunter tied the game at five. An RBI single from Kinder gave the Lions a 6-5 lead after three.
Both teams were scoreless until the RiverHawks got two runs in the sixth to go back up 8-6.
Tommy Stevenson put the Lions on top in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run blast to right center to give the Lions a 9-8 lead heading to the seventh.
The RiverHawks got a home run of their own in the top of the ninth to tie the game at nine, but Kusiak took a 1-2 pitch to right field for a two-out, walk-off home run to give the Lions the win.
Stevenson went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Kusiak was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs. Hunter and Kinder had two RBIs and a run scored, each. Miller drove in a pair, while
Jordan Fitzpatrick,
Troy Gagan,
Dexter Swims and
Clay Milas all scored a run each.
Corey Cowan started and went two innings.
Scott Duensing threw two innings, while
Cole Woods had three innings pitched.
Logan VanWey threw the final two innings and picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the season.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when Southern travels to Pittsburg State for a three-game set with the Gorillas.
