Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program was swept today inside the Pat Lipira Softball Complex to #3 Augustana.
In game one Augustana (10-2) scored eight runs in the first inning with two outs and that was all they needed winning 8-0. Southern would put runners in scoring situations in the first, third, and fifth innings. Josie Tofpi and Kristen Wade both went 1-of-2 and Abbey Gann pitched four scoreless innings of relief striking out two Vikings.
Game two had the Lions scoring in the first inning as Yazmin Vargas scored off a throw from first base to home beating the throw. Augustana responded with four runs in the second, scoring a run in both the third and fourth inning. Leighton Withers hit a two-run home run over the right center fencing as the Lions cut the lead to 6-3 after four innings. Augustana answered back with five runs in the fifth to run rule the game 11-3.
Kara Amos and Abbey Gann pitched 2.1 innings each in the loss. Withers finished 2-of-2, Vargas went 2-of-3 and stole a base.
Next up for the Lions is a MIAA conference doubleheader Friday March 27th against rival Pittsburg State at home. First pitch is set for 12 pm and 2 pm from the Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
