Softball Wraps Up Hy-Vee Tournament

St. Joesph, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program split day two of the Hy-Vee Classic hosted by Missouri Western today.
 

Southern (8-8, 1-3 MIAA) got off to winning start to the day with a walk-off 10-9 win in the eighth inning. Upper Iowa (4-8) scored three in the third inning to begin the scoring in the game before the Lions responded with two runs in the fourth.
 

The fifth inning saw the Peacocks grow the lead up to 5-2 before The Pride roared into action for five runs. Josie Tofpi hit a two-run home run her first homer of the season, while Sidnie Hurst singled home Tori Frazier, before picking up a run off of a fielder's choice. Izzy Medrano hit a sacrifice fly to score Adrianna Young to capitulate Southern ahead 7-5.
 

Ashlynn Williams and Kara Amos decided it was time to take it back-to-back hitting first pitch solo shots in the sixth inning. On the season it was Williams fourth home run, and for Amos it was her second.
 

The Peacocks scored three in the seventh to tie it at nine all, the Lions had a runner on third before grounding out to push the game into extra innings. Upper Iowa had their runner on second out on a catcher to second base to third base pickoff before fouling out and grounding out in the top half of the inning. Southern responded as Yazmin Vargas was placed on second and scored off a Makaila Leonhart single to walk-off the game.
 

Kara Amos started in the circle going 5 innings striking out five as Abby Atkin picked up her fourth win of the season after pitching the final 3 innings and striking out three.
 

Game two featured the Lions paired with #14 Winona State (11-1) as the Warriors came away 6-1 winners. Winona State got on the board first in the second inning before scoring again in the fourth. Southern picked up its run in the fourth off a Williams RBI single scoring Vargas to make it 2-1. Winona State was blanked in the fifth inning before scoring once in the sixth and three in the seventh to finish off the game. 
 

Abby Atkin started going 4.1 innings as she picked up her third loss of the season.
