Owasso, Okla. -- The Missouri Southern men's golf team finished a stellar tournament as the Lions were second as a team and
Connor Williamson won the individual title at the RSU Hillcat Classic, hosted by Rogers State at Bailey's Ranch Golf Club.
Williamson shot an even par 216 for the tournament, but he was on fire on the back nine to start the final round of the tournament today. The freshman had five birdies on the back nine to finish four under at the turn. Williamson was one under for the day to win the individual title by one stroke.
Ben Epperly and
Logan Greer both shot a three-round 225 to finish tied for ninth. Greer had three birdies on the back nine and on eon the front, while Epperly was consistent all day to finish in the top ten.
Ben Marckmann shot a final-round 74 to shoot 227 on the tournament and tied for 12th, while
Grant Sikes was tied for 15th after improving six strokes from round one to three to shoot a 234 for the tournament. Marckmann had three birdies on the day, while Sikes had a pair.
Josh Hamnett finished 39th at 247, but improved by 11 strokes from his round one and two scores.
As a hole, the Lions had 15 birdies in round three, 15 in round two and eight in the opening round for 38 birdies in the tournament.
Sioux Falls edged out the Lions by four strokes to take the team title with Rogers State placing third. Concordia St. - Paul was fourth, followed by Rogers State's B squad. Newman was sixth, followed by South Dakota Mines, Northwestern Oklahoma, Fort Hays State and Murray State CC to round out the team scores.
"This is the kind of performance that we're looking for from this roster," said head coach
Mike Wheeler. "Outstanding team play last two rounds. You have to have four scores at 75 or better to have a chance at winning. Super performance by
Connor Williamson, a win in only his second collegiate event. Very proud of the MOSO men."
The Lions will be back in action on March 22 and 23 as Southern travels to Dallas to compete in the Trophy Club Classic hosted by Texas A&M Commerce at Trophy Club CC.
