Will Bausinger went the distance and set the MSSU career strikeout record in the process as the Lions completed the sweep of visiting Emporia State with a 7-0 win in the series finale today at Warren Turner Field.
Bausinger struck out 14 batters and walked just one as he shutout the Hornets (2-5, 0-3 MIAA) limiting them to just three hits. Bausinger now has 279 strikeouts in his career, passing Payton Walker who previously had the record of 269.
Southern (9-0, 3-0 MIAA) got a run in the second when
Joe Kinder singled home
Dexter Swims to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Both teams remained scoreless until the sixth when the Lions broke out for four runs.
Grant Harris dobuled down the left field line to score Swims, while Kinder followed that up with a double of his own, scoring Harris and
Matt Miller. Kinder then scored on a wild pitch to put the Lions up 6-0 after six.
Southern got a pair of runs in the eighth when
Jordan Fitzpatrick singled ome Harris and
Troy Gagan dobuled home Fitzpatrick.
Kinder went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored in the game. Harris and Swims scored a pair of runs each, while Fitzpatrick, Gagan and Harris had an RBI each.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when the Lions travel to Washburn for a three-game set with the Ichabods. Southern will play a single-game on Friday and two games on Saturday.
