Huge Second Half Lifts Lions Over Rogers State 67-53

Claremore, Okla. – Stan Scott scored a season-high 26 points as the Missouri Southern men's basketball team won its fourth-straight game, disposing of Rogers State 67-53 inside the Claremore Expo Center.
 
Southern (6-3, 3-0 MIAA) got 26 points and 10 rebounds from Scott as he pulled in a career-high five steals, as well. Alex Jones added 12 points on 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from long-range, while Winston Dessesow and Margin Macenis had eight points each. Christian Bundy had eight rebounds and five points.
 
Rogers State (6-3, 1-3 MIAA) was led by Jordan Coblin with 17 points, while Devin Pullum had 15 of his own.
 
The HIllcats jumped out to an 11-2 lead early on before a dunk from Scott with 16:43 left stopped the run for RSU. A bucket from Scott and a free throw from Bundy capped a 9-0 run from the Lions to tie the game at 11 with 11:11 left in the first half.
 
RSU answered back with a 7-0 run of its own to lead 18-11 before a layup from Bundy with just under nine to go made the score 18-13, Hillcats.
 
The Hillcats led 20-15, before a 5-0 run from the Lions, capped from a freebie by Scott tied the score again, this time at 20 with 3:44 to go in the half. Both teams struggled from the field as time wound down in the half as RSU took a 29-23 lead into the break.
 
A three from Jones to start the second half got the Lions within three (29-26), and a pair of free throws from Dessesow with 15:39 on the clock gave the Lions a 32-31 lead.
 
A three-point play from Scott with eight minutes to go pushed the Southern lead to eight (48-40) and a pair of free throws from Macenis with 5:25 left pushed the lead to 54-43. A three from Jones and the ensuing free throw completed the four-point play and gave the Lions a 59-48 lead with three minutes to go.
 
Southern led by 16 after a three-point play from Scott with 57 seconds left which proved to be the largest lead of the game.
 
The Lions outscored Rogers State 44-24 in the second half to put the game away. Southern shot 42 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line, while limiting RSU to 33 percent from the floor. The Lions had a 42-32 advantage in rebounds and a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.
 
Southern will be back in action on Thursday night as the Lions will play host to Central Missouri. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is set for 7:30 pm.
