Lions Roar To 74-50 Win Over Missouri S&T

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri Southern women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season inside Gibson Arena on the road as the Lions defeated Missouri S&T 74 - 50 behind Anna Hall's career-high 17 points.

Southern (1-2) was led by Hall's 17 points, going 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from free throws while grabbing six rebounds. Lacy Stokes added 16 points, eight rebounds and game-highs in assists (7) and steals (4). Mia Topping added 12 points to lead all bench scorers while adding three rebounds and four assists. Cameron Call connected on two three's and had 11 points from the bench.
 
Missouri S&T (1-1) was led by Katelynne Roberts with 11 points. Kristen Keys led the Miners with seven rebounds and had three steals. Marta Durk lead the team with four steals and added seven points and five rebounds. 
 
The Lions scored first as Stokes hit a floater to with 9:33 left in the first quarter. She gave the Lions their first lead of the night (3-2) making a free throw with 8:44 left in the quarter. 
 
The Miners responded with an 11-3 run for their biggest lead of the game (13-6) with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter. Southern took a 14-13 lead with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter thanks to a Hall layup off a Topping assist, followed up with Topping finishing the scoring (16-14) in the first with a pull-up jumper with 12 seconds remaining to cap off a 10-2 run by the Lions.
 
Layne Skiles got the scoring going in the second quarter on the Lions' first possession from a Topping assist to make it 18-16 with 9:30 left in the quarter. Topping connected on a three from Stokes with 5:29 remaining to force a Miners timeout and give the Lions their first 10-plus point lead of the game (26-16). 
 
Hall put the finishing touches on the first half scoring for the Lions with a layup from a Kaitlin Hunnicutt assist with 57 seconds remaining in the half. At the half Missouri Southern lead 36-23 with Hall leading the team with 10 points and six rebounds while Stokes and Topping added nine points each.
 
The Lions opened the scoring in the second half when Stokes connected on a driving layup on the first possession of the third quarter. The Lions and Miners battled for the third quarter lead before Brooke Stauffer connected on a three from a Skiles assist with under two seconds remaining in the quarter that ensured the Lions won the quarter 20-17 and were ahead 56-40 after three quarters.
 
Call connected on a three from a Stokes assist with 8:25 remaining in regulation stretching the lead to 19 (61-42). Stokes put the Lions ahead by 21 (63-42) with 7:49 remaining before the Lions ended with their largest lead of the game 72-44 following a made Hall free throw with 3:34 remaining. 
 
The Lions shot better than the Miners from the field (41.7 – 29.8), from three (26.1 – 21.1), made more free throws (18-12), assists (16-9) and forced 25 Miners turnovers. 
 
Southern will be back in action next Saturday, playing host to Oklahoma Panhandle State at 1:30 pm from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
