Topeka, Kan. – The Missouri Southern volleyball team took a set form No. 1 ranked Washburn, but the Lions fell in four sets tonight inside Lee Arena.
Southern (3-13, 0-6 MIAA) got seven kills from
Irina Alekseeva, while
Armyni Perales had six of her own.
Sophie Mader dished out 15 assists, while
Brooklynn McCain had 17 digs.
Kierson Maydew and Alekseeva had three blocks each, while Perales and
Amelia Neels had two.
Washburn (15-1, 7-0 MIAA) got 18 kills from Genna Berg and 12 from Allison Maxwell.
The Ichabods led from start to finish in the first set and took the opener by a score of 25-8. Set two saw two ties, but Washburn never relinquished the lead and took set two by a score of 25-8, as well.
Set three saw five ties and two lead changes as the teams traded scores and leads through the first half of the set. Tied at 12, the Lions reeled off five of the next six points to take a 17-13 lead and force a Washburn timeout.
A block by Alekseeva and Neels made the score 22-18 and forced Washburn's second timeout to which the Ichabods fought back and got within a point at 23-22. Southern, however, got a kill from Perales to make the score 24-22 and a block from Perales and
Emily-Kate Lonergan gave the Lions the third set, 25-22.
Set four saw three ties and two lead changes as Washburn jumped out to an 11-4 lead to start the frame. Washburn led 20-8, and despite the Lions got six points late, Southern couldn't complete the comeback.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as Southern will take on Emporia State at 3 pm.
