Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team got double-digit kills from
Armyni Perales for the second-straight match but the Lions couldn't stop the hot-hitting William Jewell Cardinals and fell at Young Gymnasium three sets to none. Individual set scores were 21-25, 16-25 and 10-25.
The Lions (3-10) got 12 kills from Perales as
Sophie Mader dished out 27 assists and
Brooklynn McCain had 17 digs.
Kierson Maydew had five kills and hit .308, while posting a pair of blocks.
WJC (5-9) got 12 kills from Lily Johnson and eight from Katy Garrison.
The first set saw four ties and one lead change as the teams traded points throughout the set. The Lions led 14-11 and set was tied at 18 and 19, before the Cardinals scored four of the next five points to go ou 23-20 and force a Southern timeout. The Lions got a kill from
Bonnie Hegarty, but couldn't pull out the set win.
The second frame was tight early on with five ties in the irst ten points, but WJC went ona. 5-2 run to lead 11-7 and force a Lions' timeout. The Cardinals would close out the set. The final set saw the Cardinals jump out to a 12-6 lead and never look back.
The Lions will be right back at it tomorrow evening as Southern jumps back into MIAA play with a 7 pm first-serve against 5th-ranked Central Missouri.
