Lions Split Final Day Of Southern Invite

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Volleyball team split its final two matches of the 2019 Holiday Inn and Comfort Suites Southern Invite today as Morgan Nash nearly had two triple-double's in the process. 

The Lions (3-1) won three sets to one over Cameron, but fell in a thriller in the nightcap, three sets to two against Southwestern Oklahoma. 

In the opener, Nash recorded ten kills, 19 assists and 12 digs for her first collegiate triple double. Shaylon Sharp had 19 kills and hit .400, while Janelle Brehm had a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs. Kylee Kaaihue ha a double-double of her own with 24 assists and ten digs. Brooklynn McCain had ten digs, while Alyssa Diaz had six kills and five blocks. 

In the match, the Lions won set one by a score of 29-27, but Cameron (1-3) came back to win set two 25-23. Southern rebounded and won sets three and four by scores of 25-22 and 25-15 to take the match. The Lions had seven team blocks. 

In the second match of the day, Southern and Southwestern Oklahoma (2-2) split the first four sets to force a fifth and deciding frame. Individual set scores for the Lions were 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 19-25 and 10-15. 

Nash nearly had her second triple double of the day as she recorded eight kills, 40 assists and 12 digs, while adding three blocks. Brehm had 15 kills and 19 digs, while Alicia Pickett had 14 kills, four digs and eight blocks. Sharp had 11 kills, while Emalee Lowe had 34 digs. 

The Lions had ten team blocks in the match. 

Southern will be back in action this Tuesday evening as the Lions play host to Drury University inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. First-serve is slated for 7 pm.
