Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Southern football team struggled offensively and fell 45-0 on the road at Nebraska-Kearney to start the season.
The Lions (0-1, 0-1 MIAA) were led offensively by
Caleb Batie who had 18 carries for 65 yards.
Sean Kelly completed 23-of-43 passes for 176 yards, while
Cole Dunbar caught five passes for 35 yards.
LeEarl Patterson caught four passes, while
Carson Day,
Eric Dedrick Jr. and
Dalton James all had three catches each with Day finishing with a team-high 40 yards.
Defensively,
Deshon Cowling had a game-high 13 tackles with two for a loss of three yards.
Justin Legier had ten stops, while
Paul Williams and
Akel Beard had seven tackles each.
UNK (1-0, 1-0) quarterback Alex McGinnis went 12-for-17 for 111 yards and a touchdown, while picking up 94 yards on the ground. Darrius Webb had 162 yards and three scores on the ground, while David Goodwin had 113 yards and two scores.
Ryley Hathorn had nine punts on the night for 381 yards and an average of 42.3 yards per kick.
The Lions had 246 yards of offense on the night and held the ball for 25:13 of the game.
Southern will be back in action on September 8 as the Lions will play host to Lindenwood for the home opener. Kickoff from Fred G. Hughes Stadium is slated for 6 pm.
