Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team dropped both ends of a double-header today, falling 4-1 in game one and 7-6 in game tow to visiting Northwest Missouri at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (23-20, 11-18 MIAA) fell behind 4-0 early in game one after the Bearcats (25-18, 20-9 MIAA) The Lions had a hit each from
Johnny Balsamo,
Alex Phillips,
Joe Kinder and
Dan Lenz. Kinder hit home run number 3 of the season.
Jared Flores started and went six innings, striking out five and allowing just three earned runs, but fell to 4-3 on the season.
Joey Reeves threw three innings of hitless relief, striking out three.
Southern got its lone run in the game on a home run from Kinder in the third.
Game two saw the Lions go up 5-0 after one inning. The Lions sent nine batters to the plate in the first and had a home run from Phillips and
Cory Canterbury. Kinder had an RBI in the inning, as well and the Lions pulled off a double-steal of home and second, scoring Kinder.
Northwest sent nine to the plate in the second and scored four runs to get within a run. The Bearcats scored two more in the fourth to go up 6-5, but the Lions added a run in the sixth to tie it at six on an RBI from Balsamo. Northwest, however, got an RBI single from Logan Rycraft in the 8th for the go-ahead run.
Trevor Dudar saved both games today and all three this weekend for the Bearcats.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday night as Southern travels to Pittsburg State for a 6 pm first-pitch.
