Lions Sweep Final Double-Header Against Truman

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team won its eighth game in a row as the Lions took both ends of a double-header against Truman, winning 8-6 and 6-3.

Game one saw Southern (11-2) trail 4-2 after three innings, but the Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put away the win.

Seth Mesey started, but Jared Flores threw four innings in relief to move to 2-0 on the season, striking out six and walking none. Cam Bednar threw the final two thirds of an inning to pick up the save, his second of the season.

Offensively, Alex Phillips drove in four and Alec Alvarez went 4-4 at the plate. Phillips had a three-run home run, while Alvarez scored twice and drove in a run. Garan Stevens had a pinch-hit home run in the sixth to lead off the inning.

Game two saw the Lions start slow, as well, but freshman Zac Shoemaker came in and threw a gem in relief as he went seven and two thirds of an inning, striking out ten and allowing just two hits and no earned runs to move his record to 2-1 on the season. Brennon Covington struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.

Offensively, Phillips, Easton Fortuna and Cory Canterbury had two hits each, while Evan Cheng went 3-4 in the game. Johnny Balsamo scored twice, while Fortuna, Mike Million, Canterbury and Cheng had RBIs.

The Lions trailed 2-0 after one, but scored a run each in the first and second to tie it up and added two more in the third to go up 4-2. Southern then added single runs in the fifth and sixth to put away the win.

The Lions will be back again next weekend as Southern travels to Northeastern State for a three-game series to open up MIAA play.
