Women’s Basketball Wins Seventh-Straight, Defeats Lindenwood 71-65

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - After trailing by nine early on and ten to begin the second period, the Missouri Southern Women's basketball team battled back with three players scoring in double-figures to come out with a 71-65 victory inside Hyland Area Thursday evening.

MSSU (8-7, 5-2 MIAA) junior guard Chelsey Henry scored a team-high 23 points after going
8-for-16 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Desirea Buerge added 15 points and five rebounds, while guard Dru Clark recorded 14 points and five rebounds in the win.

Lindenwood (10-6, 2-5 MIAA) was led by the duo of Sara Ross and Lexi Moe who both registered 20 points. Gabby Walker contributed with a double-double of ten points and ten rebounds.

Out of the gate, LWU took a 7-0 advantage and stretched the lead to nine (11-2), but Southern battled back to achieve a tie (17-17) and find itself down by only three transitioning into the second quarter.

The second quarter began the same way as Lindenwood went on an 8-3 run to start and push to ten. MSSU responded with a 13-4 spurt to close out the half down trailing by one (34-33) in way of nine second chance points and limiting LWU to only one free-throw attempt in the first half.

After a missed shot by Lindenwood, Clark took the rebound and pushed the ball up the floor to find Henry on the fast break for a layup to give Missouri Southern its first lead of the game (35-34). Scoring changes led the way for the next three minutes until Southern created a 16-5 spark to take an eight-point advantage heading into the final period (56-48) after being down three at the 4:59 mark.

LWU cut the lead to two, but did not make it over the hump again as Southern converted 8-for-8 shots from the line to secure the six-point win and sweep the season series between the two squads.

MSSU looks to continue its winning ways against Lincoln on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1:30 pm.
