Women’s Basketball Defeats Lincoln, 94-90, In Double-Overtime Thriller

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball team had three players register 20-plus points to lead the Lions over the Lincoln Blue Tigers 94-90 in double-overtime inside the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center Thursday evening.
 
It was the first time in this century that Southern had three players finish with 20 points or more in one game. The Lions (2-7, 1-2 MIAA) were led by junior forward Desirea Buerge, who matched a career-high with 28 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Junior guard Dru Clark recorded a career-high 23 points after going 7-for-9 for the entire game and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond-the-arc, while junior guard Chelsey Henry added 20 points in the win.
 
Senior forward Jenson Maydew grabbed 10 rebounds for her fourth double-digit board game while pouring in eight points and dishing out four assists.
 
LU's (3-5, 0-1 MIAA) guard Citlali Lopez led all scorers with 30 points (10-for-17), while Bre Colman added a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Lajanea Kimbrough contributed 19 points and Faith Brintle rounded out the fray with ten points.
 
With 2:35 left in the second period, the two teams were knotted up at 27-27 until the Lions ripped off a 7-2 run to take a 34-29 advantage into the locker room. They would lead by as much as eight throughout the third period and found its self once again leading by five entering the final period.
 
The Blue Tigers cut the deficit to one with 5:40 to go and eventually tie it up to send the game into overtime after a layup by Bre Coleman with 35 seconds left on the clock. LU took its first lead of the (75-74) at the 2:22 mark in the first overtime period as both teams traded buckets down the stretch. Coleman recorded another layup, this time to put the Tigers in front by two with 14 seconds remaining.
 
Head coach Ronnie Ressel called a timeout to design a play in the final seconds to try and a force a second overtime. The ball ended up in Buerge's hands with 6 seconds left as she was fouled and headed to line for a chance to tie the game. She converted on both free throw attempts and gave the Lions another chance to close the deal.
 
In the second overtime, the Lions began on a 10-5 run to extend their lead to five and go 4-for-4 from the line in the final minutes to earn their first MIAA victory of the season. 
 
MSSU looks to carry its momentum into Saturday as it welcomes Lindenwood into Leggett and Platt for a 1:30 pm contest.
