Lions Open Season at Home to Host MIAA/GAC Challenge

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Women's basketball team opens up regular season play by hosting the third annual MIAA/GAC Challenge Presented by Drury Inn and Suites over the weekend on Nov. 10-11.

The Lions welcome in Oklahoma Baptist and Southwestern Oklahoma State of the Great American Conference as well as fellow Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) member No. 11-ranked Emporia State. MSSU faces off against OBU to kick things off on Friday at noon before taking on SWOSU on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start to conclude the event.

Oklahoma Baptist Series
Southern comes into Friday night's game on a three-game winning streak against OBU with the last two times coming at the conference challenge. The Lions took hold of the series (3-1) after defeating the Bison by two points (83-81) in last year's battle. Junior Chelsey Henry scored 19 points off the bench, while Jenson Maydew added 10 points and seven rebounds in a starting role. With the game knotted up at 81-81, Henry got a good look at the go-ahead jumper with three seconds left in the game to allow MSSU to escape with the victory at a neutral site.
Southern is 9-7 in season openers in the last 16 years and are 1-1 when starting the season off at home. The last time came in 2014-15 season after defeating Oklahoma Panhandle 83-47 in game two of the Fairfield Inn/Pizza Hut Classic.

Southwestern Oklahoma State Series
The Lions still lead the series 4-3 despite falling to the Bulldogs last season 90-73 on day two of this event. Junior Desirea Buerge, and seniors Julianna Wadsworth and Jasmine Green all contributed with nine points in the in the loss, while two former players recorded double-digits in rebounds. MSSU battled back from a 25-12 first quarter deficit to cut the lead to seven heading into halftime, but that would be the closest that they would get.
