Joplin, Mo. – Lindenwood out scored the Missouri Southern men's basketball program 17-10 in overtime and defeated the Lions 84-77 in overtime tonight on
Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (10-6, 4-3 MIAA) was led in scoring by 21 points from both
CJ Carr and
JJ Cratit. Carr went 6-14 from the field and 8-9 from the free throw line as Cratit was 6-16 and an identical 8-9 from the charity stripe.
Elyjah Clark and
Dexter Frisbie both scored 13 points as Frisbie added nine boards to go with his career-high 13 points in his first career start.
Lawrence Brown scored nine points and added eight rebounds as Southern saw all of its points scored by the starting five.
Lindenwood (13-6, 3-4 MIAA) had three in double-figures, led by 28 points from Jacskon Price.
It took nearly four minutes before the first points of the game were scored, but a three from Cratit gave Southern an early 3-0 lead. Lindenwood led 11-6 with 12:48 to go in the half, but a three from Carr and a bucket from Brown cut the lead to just one (16-15), Lindenwood with 8:21 to go.
That would be as close as Southern got to Lindenwood in the half, as MSSU went into the locker room, trailing 32-25.
Southern started the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 34-32 lead capped by a pair of freebies from Cratit with 17:12 left. The run reached 16-5 as the Lions led 41-37 with 14:41 left.
The lead reached eight (45-37) after a turnaround jumper from Cratit with 12:31 left and a pair of layups from Cratit and Carr pushed the lead to ten (52-42). Southern led 58-48 with 8:03 left in the game, but over the next six minutes, Lindenwood went on a 17-7 run to tie the game at 65.
A pair of freebies from Carr with a minute to go stopped the run and gave Southern a 67-65 lead, but a basket from Lindenwood the next time down tied the game at 67 with 42 seconds to go. Southern held the ball for the final 42 seconds, but couldn't get a shot to fall and the game went to overtime.
Lindenwood hit a three to open the overtime and a layup and a three from Lindenwood's Price, the last coming with 43 seconds to go gave Lindenwood a 78-71 lead. A bucket from Clark with 12.3 seconds left made the score 81-77, Lindenwood and that would be as close as Southern would get.
Southern shot 46 percent from the field, and 77 percent from the free throw line. Southern out rebounded Lindenwood 39-31, but 20 Southern turnovers led to 22 Lindenwood points. Southern out scored Lindenwood 40-18 in the paint.
Southern will be back in action on Saturday as the Lions welcome in Lincoln University. Tip off is slated for 3 pm.
