Tahlequah. Okla. - The Missouri Southern Women's Soccer team (1-2-1) dropped a 1-0 non-conference match to Northeastern State (6-0-0) Sunday afternoon at DeLoach Field on the NSU campus.
The first half Southern and the RiverHawks played to a draw with the Lions outshooting NSU 5-4 but both goalies, Jordan Woodruff for Northeastern State and freshman
Luz Galindo for the Lions, recording three saves each. The RiverHawks had the edge in corner kicks 4-1 over Southern in the first half.
In the second half Northeastern State out-shot the Lions 7-4 and scored the game winner on a free kick from the top of the box following a foul on Southern in the 71st minute. Southern had a chance to tie it from the top of the box in the 82nd minute but senior
Sitona Holm's shot was saved by Woodruff. Southern had another shot to tie it in the 89th minute but the shot from senior
Carly Cecil, from the top of the box, again was saved by Woodruff.
Cecil led the Lions' offensive attack with two shots, both on goal, and freshman
Brianna Smith along with junior
Elizabeth Saavedra added two shots of their own and with one each on goal. Holm, senior
Hannah Cook, and junior
Taylor Beck each added a shot as well for Southern.
Galindo played all 90 minutes in the net for Southern recording five saves while facing 11 total shots.
Southern will be back in action on Thursday evening as they host Central Oklahoma in the final scheduled non-conference match. Kick off at Hal Bodon Field is slated for 6 p.m.
