Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions (16-23, 4-8 MIAA) split a pair of MIAA games this afternoon with Washburn (14-14, 4-6 MIAA) winning 2-0 before falling 7-5 in the night cap at Lea Kungle Field.
Game OneSouthern scored the lone runs of the game in the bottom of the third after senior
Alana Hester got on base with a one out bunt single. Sophomore
Abi Corbett followed that up with a first pitch single to left before freshman
Taurean Guzman reached on a throwing error by the Washburn shortstop that allowed both Hester and Corbett to score. In all the Lions tallied five hits with Hester picking up two and Corbett, junior
Sydney Fry, and sophomore
Myranda Stewart each collecting one.
Senior
Ashley Lutz (9-11) pitched the complete game shut out allowing nine hits with three walks and six strike outs.
Game TwoWashburn started the scoring off in game two in the top of the first after taking advantage of a two out error by Missouri Southern's shortstop. The Ichabods added two more in the second inning on an infield single and a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Washburn. The Lions bats were quiet until the sixth whey they exploded for five runs with three straight singles by Guzman and fellow freshmen
Angel Badalamenti and
Ashley Caldarella. A fielding error by the Washburn shortstop allowed Fry to reach first safely and scored Guzman to get Southern on the board. That prompted a pitching change by Washburn and after the change the Ichabods got two quick outs before freshman
Kylie Wesbrooks to a 3-2 pitch through the left side of the infield to tie the game at 3-3 and put runners on the corners. Hester took the very next pitch to deep left center for a two run triple and gave the Lions a 5-3 lead. Washburn answered right back in the top of the seventh with four runs of their own on four hits to earn the comeback 7-5 win over Southern.
Guzman started the game inside the circle going six innings allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and two strike outs. Lutz pitched one full inning in relief allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits with a walk and a strike out.
Up NextThe Lions will return to action on Saturday with a noon start in a MIAA double header with Emporia State at Lea Kungle Field.
