Softball Drops Final Pair at 2016 TMZ Memorial Tourament

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Softball Lions dropped a pair of one run games Sunday afternoon to Rockhurst, in 10 innings, and Drury in the final day of the Teri Mathis Zenner Memorial Tournament at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Game One
Rockhurst struck first in the top of the second with a 3-1 lead off walk to catcher Rachel Evans. Evans moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from second baseman Taylor Rupe then scored on a second wild pitch of the inning. The Lions answered back in the home half of the third as freshman Kylie Wesbrooks led off with a single to right center. Following a fielder's choice that forced out Wesbrooks senior Alana Hester stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball to the RU shortstop, sophomore Abi Corbett was safe on the play at first when RU's first baseman pulled her foot. On the next pitch freshman Ashley Caldarella perfectly executed a squeeze play that scored Hester from third to tie it at 1-1. It remained until the 10th inning. Rockhurst, with a runner placed on second, took advantage of a sacrifice bunt and fly to take home the 2-1 extra inning win.

Senior Ashley Lutz (3-4) pitched all 10 innings for the Lions giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits with six strike outs.

Game Two
Again the visiting team, this time Drury, struck first in the top of the third when Kari Hillenburg scored on a RBI ground out to second base following a throwing error by the Lions' catcher. In the fifth inning Drury added an insurance run off a single to right field to make it 2-0 Panthers. Southern came back in the bottom of the frame with freshman Taurean Guzman getting a one out single up the middle. Another single, this one down the right field line, by Wesbrooks moved Guzman to third with just one out. Following a stolen base by Wesbrooks, Guzman scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1, the closest the Lions would get.

Guzman (2-2) pitched all seven innings against Drury allowing two runs, one earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Wesbrooks led the Lions offense going 2-for-6 (.333) at the plate. Sophomore Myranda Stewart also collected two hits along with Guzman for six of the Lions nine hits. Lutz led the pitching staff with a 0.70 ERA and an opponents batting average of .154
