Warrensburg, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's basketball team fell behind 13-0 to start the game, but fought back and won 78-71 at Central Missouri tonight completing the season sweep of the Mules inside the Multipurpose Building.
Southern (16-11, 13-8 MIAA) complete the two-game season sweep of the Mules for the first time since the 02-03 season.
Taevaunn Prince led the Lions in scoring with 25 points, all in the second half, as the senior was held scoreless in the first. He went 7-18 from the field, 2-4 from long-range and 9-11 from the free throw line. The nine freebies give him 253 on the season and set a new MIAA single-season record, surpassing the total of 252 done by Central Missouri's Armando Becker in the 90-91 sesaon.
Austin Wright scored 21 points on 5-7 shooting and 2-3 from long-range. He went 9-12 from the free throw line and the two three pointers now give him 81 on the season, breaking his single-season school record he set last season.
Charlie Brown scored 17 and had five rebounds as he and Prince led the team with five apiece.
Central (13-13, 7-13 MIAA) had four score in double-figures led by 21 points from D'Marnier Cunningham. Marquiez Lawrence scored 17.
The Mules opened up the game on a 13-0 run after a three from Tony Cochran with 14:21 left to play in the first. A pair of free throws from Brown were the Lions' first points with 13:57 to go and a bucket from Wright with 13:09 made the score 15-4, Central Missouri.
A three from Brown got Southern to within six (15-9) with 10:57 left, but the Mules pushed their lead back to 15 (33-18) after a free throw from Williams Gabriel with 3:05 left. From there, however, the Lions closed the half on an 8-1 run and trailed 34-26 going into the break.
After being held scoreless in the first, Prince picked up his first points of the game on a layup with 16:30 to go in the second half. That bucket cut the lead to just two (39-37). A pair of freebies from Wright the next trip down tied the game at 39 and a set of free throws from Brown with 14:23 to go gave the Lions their first lead of the game at 41-39. It also marked a 22-6 run by the Lions to take the lead.
Both teams traded baskets, but Central had a six point cushion (52-46) after a three from Cunningham with 11:35 left. A layup from Brown with just under ten to go tied the game at 52 and a jumper from
Greg Renfroe a minute later tied the score again at 54, but a three from Prince with 8:15 left gave the Lions a three point lead 57-54. Central tied the game again at 65 after a three from Jakob Lowrance with 3:44 to go, but a pair of free-throws from Prince with 2:27 to go gave the Lions a lead they would not relinquish.
Southern shot 48 percent in the game, but made 61 percent of its shots from the field in the second half, as well as 67 percent of its long-range jumpers in the second half. Central shot 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three point line.
With the Southern women's win early in the day, this marks the first time in school history that both the men and women have swept the season series from Central Missouri.
Southern will finish the regular season up at home next weekend when the Lions play host to Pittsburg State. Tip off from
