Joplin, Mo. -- The 24th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team hit five home runs as the Lions completed the four-game sweep of Bemidji State, winning 14-2 today at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (4-0) had home runs from
Brett Graham,
Tyler Sutherland,
Joe Paulino,
Hayden Steele and
Trever Burkdoll. Sutherland went 2-4 on the day with three driven in and three runs scored, while Steele drove in three, as well. Paulino drove in two and scored twice, while
Jesse Rall scored three times and
Richie Gorski scored twice.
Cody Smith started for Southern and went six innings, striking out nine and allowing just two hits for the win (1-0).
Hunter Harrison and
Craig Larkin threw scoreless frames, and
Austin Aspegren closed out the ninth.
BSU (0-4) had two hits each from Joe Hanowski, Tyler Nelson and Nick Hovila.
The Lions picked up four runs in the second when Paulino had a two-run homer to start the scoring.
Danny Biggs tripled home
Matt Smith and then scored on a Burkdoll RBI.
The Lions picked up an unearned run in the third and four more in the fourth. Burkdoll homered on the first pitch of the fourth, and Sutherland added a three-run longball in the inning, as well.
Southern scored three more in the seventh on a Steele home run and added two more in the eighth on Graham's homer.
The Lions will be back at it on Wednesday when Southern plays host to Northeastern State in a non-conference game. The single nine-inning affair will start at 2 pm.
