St. Charles, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern football team fell down 21-7 at the half and could not overcome that deficit as the Lions lost 42-28 today on the road at Lindenwood.
The Lions (2-8, 2-8 MIAA) were led by
Brayden Scott as he went 30-46 for 357 yards and three touchdowns, but had two costly interceptions. The 357 yards are the first time a Southern quarterback has thrown for 300 since 2015 when
TJ Fleeton threw for 344 against Fort Hays State. Scott also rushed for 62 yards on 13 carries.
Jordan Morrison and
Scott Lathrop caught seven passes each with Morrison reeling in 152 yards and a long of 34.
Anthony Cannon caught three passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns, while
Josh Hadley rushed for 23 yards and
Ja'Kori Bell had three carries for 15 yards and a score.
Defensively,
Justin Legier led the team with ten tackles and a half a tackle for a loss.
Ricky Green had four tackles, a sack for a loss of nine yards, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Chris Goss III and
Travelle Smith had seven stops each with Smith picking up a tackle and a half for a loss and
Trevor Plafcan seeing two of his six tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Lindenwood (3-7, 3-7 MIAA) saw quarterback Alex Faddoul complete 10-17 fro 182 yards and three touchdowns, while Aaron Daniels and Shakeem Wharton had a rushing touchdown each.
Southern opened the scoring in the game as after the defense stopped Lindenwood on the Southern seven-yard line, the Lions drove the lenghth of the field in 13 plays and 5:43, capped off with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Scott to
Josiah Bennett.
Lindenwood scored three-straight touchdowns and took a 21-7 lead into the locker room at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lions punted on their first possession, but the defense, sparked by a fumble recovery by
Ricky Green at the Lindenwood 25-yard line, helped spur some offense for Southern. Scott completed passes to
Terrell Crawford and Lathrop and rushed 13 yards to the LWU 11, and Bell finished it off with an 11-yard scamper to make the score 21-14.
Lindenwood scored once more to lead 28-14 at the end of three quarters.
LWU, however converted a Southern fumble early in the fourth to go up 35-14.
Scott hit Cannon for the first of the pair's two touchdowns with just under five minutes to go, this time a 14-yard score to make the tally 35-21, Lindenwood.
LWU answered right back, though, and Daniels rushed for 45 yards on the next drive to make the score 42-21.
A late touchdown from Scott to Cannon, this time for 15 yards, made the final tally 42-28.
Lindenwood held a slim lead in total offense, 496-446, but the Southern out passed Lindenwood 357-182. Lindenwood, however, out rushed Southern 314-107.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend as Southern will close out the season with the 2016 Miners Bowl. Kickoff between the Lions and Pittsburg State will be slated for 3:30 pm from Hughes Stadium.
