St. Cloud, Minn. -- Missouri Southern sophomore
CJ Carr, one night after scoring 25 points, followed that up with 47 points as the Lions took out 17th ranked Minnesota State 109-103 in double overtime, going undefeated in the MIAA/NSIC Challenge this weekend.
The 47 points for Carr is the second-most all-time in a single-game in MSSU (2-0) history, trailing just 49 points scored by Carl Tyler on January 13, 1984. Carr went 15-33 from the field, 6-13 from long range and 11-13 from the free throw line, adding five rebounds, three assists and seven steals.
LJ Ross pulled down a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, going 6-12 from the field and 8-12 from the free throw line.
JJ Cratit scored 20 points with eight rebounds, while
Elyjah Clark had 11 points.
MSU (1-1) had four score in double figures led by 30 points from Joey Witthus and 25 from Aarias Austin.
A three from Witthus gave MSU a 13-5 lead early on, but a jumper from Carr with 13:12 left to go in the first half put the Lions up by two at 17-15. A jumper from Carr with just over seven minutes left pushed the lead to seven (28-21) and a dunk from Ross off a steal at mid-court gave the Lions a 35-21 lead with 5:18 to go in the half.
MSU chipped away at the lead and got as close as six after a jumper from
Charlie Brown with seven seconds to go, but a three from Cratit as time expired gave the Lions a 46-37 lead going into the locker room.
Southern led by 11 (63-52) after a layup from Cratit at the midway point of the second half, and the lead was eight (70-62) with 6:31 to go after a pair of freebies from Ross.
The Mavericks went on an 13-4 run over the next four minutes and a layup from Jon Fuqua gave MSU a 77-74 lead with 2:37 to go in regulation. A layup from Witthus with 16 seconds left put MSU up 78-76, but a putback from Ross as time expired sent the game to overtime.
Both teams traded baskets in the first overtime and a free throw from Austin with 25 seconds left tied the game at 90 to force double-overtime.
In the second overtime, the game was tied at 94, before a three from Carr made the score 97-94 with 2:39 left. That lead would hold as the Lions moved to 2-0 on the season.
The Lions shot 42 percent from the field in the game and 39 percent from long-range. The team made 73 percent of its free throws and scored 24 points off of 21 MSU turnovers.
Southern will be back in action on Wednesday night as the Lions travel to Carbondale, Ill. to take on Division I Southern Illinois - Carbondale. The game will be an exhibition for the Lions and will tip off at 7 pm with live coverage on ESPN3, as well as on the Missouri Southern Radio Network.
