Burgess shines in relief as No. 15 Lions defeat Washburn In MIAA Tournament

Box Score

Kansas City, Kan. -- The 15th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team came-from-behind today as Tyler Burgess picked up a win in relief as the Lions defeated Washburn 10-7 in the 2015 MIAA Baseball Tournament inside Community America Ballpark.

The Lions (39-11) move on to play the winner of the Central Missouri/Emporia State game tomorrow. Time for that game is slated for 2 pm.

Washburn (32-19) started the game on fire and chased Lions' starter Cody Hutchinson after two innings when the Ichabods had a 6-1 lead after two.

Southern, however, recovered, and rode the back of Burgess, along with some timely hitting to the win. Burgess went seven innings in relief, striking out nine and walking just one to move his record to 6-1 on the season.

After training 6-1, the Lions got back into the game with three runs in the fourth inning. Jesse Rall started the scoring with a home run to left center to cut the lead to 6-2. The long ball was number 16 on the season for Rall, tying him with Jim Baranoski, Mark Handel and Randy Brawn for the single-season MSSU record. After Jacob Bryant and Evin Natick reached, Axel Johnson singled to left center to score both runners and make the score 6-4.

The Lions added four more runs in the sixth. Mitchell Osburn and Johnson singled to start the inning, and Tee Helsel came to the plate trying to sacrifice both runners. Helsel got the bunt down, but the throw went into right field, allowing both runners to score and Helsel to move all the way to third. Richie Gorski singled home Helsel and Rall then singled home Gorski to put the Lions up 8-6 after six innings.

Washburn picked up a run in the seventh inning, a home run by David Gaunt, his second of the game, but the Lions would answer right back with two more runs of their own in their half of the eighth. Natick doubled to left center, scoring Rall and Gorski for two important insurance runs.

Burgess allowed a couple of two-out singles in the ninth, but recovered to strike out Kyle Carnahan to end the game.

Gorski went 4-5 in the game with an RBI and two runs scored. Rall was 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Natick and Johnson both had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Bryant went 2-4 with a run scored, while Osburn and Helsel both had a hit and a run scored.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow at 2 pm, facing off with the winner of the Central Missouri/Emporia State game.
