No. 11 Lions sweep a double-header at Central Oklahoma

Edmond, Okla. -- The 11th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team swept a double-header at Central Oklahoma today, winning game one 6-4 and taking the nightcap 7-6 in ten innings. 

In game one, the Lions (28-8, 19-4 MIAA) got strong pitching from starter Cody Hutchinson as Hutch went six innings and moved his record to 7-0 on the season. He struck out four and walked two, while scattering seven hits. Nick Pettus pitched a scoreless seventh for save number two on the season. 

The Lions scored two in the first on a two-RBI double from Jesse Rall, scoring Richie Gorski and Evin Natick. Southern picked up two more runs in the third on an RBI single from Axel Johnson scoring Rall and Chris Hoffman

Two more runs came in for the Lions in the fifth when Hoffman scored on an error and Jacob Bryant drove in Jon Davis to put the Lions up 6-0. 

UCO (16-20, 11-15 MIAA) made a game of it, scoring three in the sixth and one in the seventh, but couldn't score any more as Pettus shut the door in the seventh. 

Hoffman, Johnson and Bryant had two hits each, while Rall drove in two and Hoffman scored twice. Natick, Gorski, Rall and Davis scored a run each. 

In game two, the Lions scored five runs in the first inning led by a grand slam from Rall. Bryant singled home Johnson to finish the scoring in the inning. 

The Bronchos chipped away at the lead, scoring one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to go up 6-5 after six innings. 

Rall hit a homer in the seventh to tie the game and send it to extras and Gorski hit a sacrifice fly in the tenth, scoring Bryant for the go-ahead run. 

Payton Walker started and went five and a third, striking out five and walking just one, but got saddled with a no-decision. Nick Pettus pitched two and two thirds hitless and Kanon Hover threw two scoreless to move to 2-0 on the season. 

Rall went 2-4, but they were two big hits, a grand slam and a solo shot to force extras. He scored twice and drove in five. Natick went 4-5 with a run, while Johnson and Bryant had two hits each. Gorski, Hoffman, Davis and Mitchell Osburn had a hit each, while Natick, Gorski, Hoffman, Johnson and Bryant scored a run each. 

The two teams will finish off the series tomorrow with a single, nine-inning game beginning at 1 pm.
