Box Score Joplin, Mo. -- Richie Gorski hit a go ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth and Cody Hutchinson went the distance as the 22nd ranked Missouri Southern baseball team won 4-3 today over Central Missouri in the series finale.
Southern (18-3, 10-2 MIAA) went on top first when the Lions scored a run in the second on back-to-back doubles from Chris Hoffman and Jesse Rall, the latter scoring Hoffman.
The Mules (12-12, 8-8 MIAA) got two unearned runs to go on top in the top of the sixth, but the Lions answered right back in their half of the inning.
Tee Helsel doubled down the left field line, scoring Evin Natick and Richie Gorski hit home run number five on the season for the go-ahead RBIs.
Hutchinson allowed a single run in the ninth, but shut out the Mules for the win. He went all nine to move his record to 5-0 on the season, striking out six, and allowing just one earned run.
Gorski went 2-4 with a home run, driving in two and scoring twice. Hoffman was 2-3, while Rall went 2-3 with an RBI. Helsel and Natick had a hit each.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when Southern plays host to Pittsburg State in a State Farm Trophy Series matchup. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
