Box Score Bolivar, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (2-2-1, 0-1-0 MIAA) dropped their MIAA opener Friday afternoon, 4-1, at Southwest Baptist (2-1, 1-0 MIAA).
The Bearcats got on the board first as Ali Skogrand connected on a header from Amy Bolton in the 2nd minute. SBU would add another goal in the 14th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Southern came out in the second half and put two shots on goal by freshmen Taylor Beck and Hannah Bomar. Skogrand would add another header in the second half to make the SBU lead 3-0. Senior Casey Vitale, the reigning MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week, got the Lions on the board when she converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute.
SBU would answer in the 80th minute as Haylee Thibodeaux took a cross from Elin Hammar to beat Hammons 1-on-1.
Senior goalkeeper Beth Hammons would come up with eight saves on the afternoon, while facing 18 shots from the Bearcats.
The Lions took 11 shots, 5 on goal, on the afternoon.
The Lions will be back in action this Sunday as they travel to Tahlequah, Oklahoma to take on Northeastern State with kickoff scheduled for 1pm.
