Starkey helps Lions to a third place finish at Missouri Intercollegiate

Sunrise Beach, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern golf team finished its first tournament of the fall season today, placing third amongst 16 teams at the Missouri Intercollegiate at The Club at Porto Cima.

The Lions actually started the day further up the team totals than they ended yesterday, as a scoring error vaulted Southern in front of Central Missouri into second place after the new totals were taken.

Southern had one of the top two team scores yesterday in both rounds, but fell back a little today and finished the third round with a 320 team total.

Freshman Ben Starkey led the way as the Webb City native shot a 76 to finish the three-round event with a total of 227 and place tied for sixth.

Junior's Elliot Soyez and Ryan Buerk, as well as senior Andy Hogenmiller finished the tournament with a three-round score of 233 to finish tied for 25th, while freshman Garrett Roberts shot a 261.

The Lions will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday when Southern travels to Pittsburg to face off in the first MIAA points event of the year at Crestwood Country Club.
