No. 24 Lions take both ends of a double-header with Fort Hays State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Joplin, Mo. -- The No. 24 ranked Missouri Southern baseball team took both ends of a double-header tonight as the Lions won 5-2 in game one and 7-4 in game two against visiting Fort Hays State at Joe Becker Stadium.

Southern (13-1, 6-0 MIAA) picked up another complete game in the opener from starter Cody Griebling and Ryan Wheat pitched into the eighth in the nightcap.

In game one, the Lions went down 2-0 after the top of the fifth, but the Lions rebounded and scored three in the bottom half of the inning. Cullen Baxter singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Thomas Wilson singled home Baxter and moved to third on a double from Luke Acosta. Michael McCoy drove in Wilson and Acosta scored on an error at the end of the play.

Hays (2-8, 1-5 MIAA) made things interesting with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Griebling struck out Mace Krol to end the game.

Acosta was 3-4 with a run scored in the game, while Baxter went 2-3 with two runs and Wilson drove in two and scored once. Griebling went the distance, scattering six hits and striking out eight while walking one. All four runs were unearned as Griebling won his fourth of the season.

In game two, the Lions scored six runs in the second inning and made it stick. Jesse Kinzey got it started in the second with a single to left center and Dane Kolkmeyer walked behind him. Tee Helsel singled to load the bases and Baxter singled to right field, scoring Kinzey, but an error in right field allowed Kolkmeyer to score, as well. A ground out scored Helsel and an RBI double from McCoy scored two more runners.

Wheat then settled in and shined for the Lions. He retired ten batters in a row and 17 of 18 at one point. He allowed two runs in the eighth, one earned, and left with two outs in the eighth. Bo Bergen got the final out in the eighth and finished the save out, allowing an unearned run in the ninth.

Wheat went seven and two thirds of an inning, striking out five and walking just two. He allowed one earned run for his third win of the year. Kinzey went 2-4 with two runs scored, while McCoy drove in two. Five other Lions scored a run each, while MJ Sartin, Baxter, Sam Ryan and Harrison Gerber drove in a run each.

The Lions and Tigers will be back at it tomorrow after noon with a double-header beginning at 1 pm.
