Lions complete double-header sweep of Sioux Falls

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team moved to 7-0 on the season today as they finished off a four-game sweep of the University of Sioux Falls at Joe Becker Stadium. 

Southern (7-0) came from behind in game one to win 4-3 and shut out Sioux Falls for the third time this weekend with a 1-0 win in game two. 

In game one, the Lions scored first after an RBI double from MJ Sartin in the first. USF (2-6), however answered back with a run in each of the next three innings to lead 3-1 after four innings. 

Southern scored a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Tee Helsel and the Lions tied the game in the seventh when Sam Ryan singled home Harrison Gerber. Southern plated the winning run when Sartin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Cameron Beaver

Cullen Baxter was 2-3 in the game while six others had a hit each. Ethan Stenger started the game and went five innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Bo Bergen threw two hitless innings of relief to earn the win. 

In game two, the Lions scored a run in the first on an RBI single from Helsel and Jesse Kinzey made it stick as he picked up his first win at Southern, going the distance. Kinzey threw all seven and allowed just three hits, while striking out two to earn the complete-game shutout. Four different Lions had a hit in the win. 

Southern will be back in action next weekend as the Lions open up MIAA play with a four-game series on Friday through Sunday against Truman State at Joe Becker Stadium.
