Lions Fast Start Not Enough to Hold Off Bearcats

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Lions Women's Soccer squad (0-4-1) got a fast start to tonight's game scoring their first goal just 15 seconds after the match started.  But it wasn't enough to hold off the visiting Southwest Baptist Bearcats (1-3-1), as the Bearcats downed the Lions 2-1 in non-conference action.

Southern got their goal on a fastbreak off the kick off by senior Megan Stueve, her first of the year.  SBU would then answer in the 29th minute on a free kick by Kelly Isaac that deflected off the tips of sophomore goalie Abby Risner's hands.  The Bearcats would add another goal in the 38th minute as Jade Barnden knocked in a rebound off a diving Risner.

Lions' senior goalie Randi Russell would shut out Southwest Baptist in the second half recording two saves as Southern got out shot 17-14 for the game.  Senior Michelle Dimza took four shots for Southern while senior Kara Hamman and juniors Candis Clark and Alicia Vonderheid recorded two shots each.

Southern will be back in action Thursday September 22 as they host the Truman Bulldogs in their MIAA opener.  Game time is scheduled for 7pm at Hal Bodon Field.
