Kansas City, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern golf team struggled in its final round and finished in fourth place overall at the 2011 MIAA Men's Golf Championships at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City.
Southern shot 320 as a team today in the third and final round and went from third to fourth place after day one. Central Missouri took home the team title, while Washburn finished second. Fort Hays rebounded to finish three strokes in front of the Lions for third place. Missouri Western finished fifth, followed by Truman, Southwest Baptist, Lincoln and Pittsburg State.
Lions' junior Andy Hogenmiller finsihed in sixth place with an eight over 224. Jared Essary shot a final-round 79 for a 236, while Stephen Boyd shot a three-round 240. Jamie Voegeli finished with a 241, while Alec Wickey shot a 243.
Both Hogenmiller and Voegeli earned All-MIAA honors for finishing in the top ten of the MIAA's final season point standings. The Lions finished third in the MIAA team standings as Central Missouri won every MIAA points event this year. The final MIAA standings are listed below.
With the win, Southern also captured the Sonic Trophy Series point between the Lions and Pittsburg State. Southern now has a 6-4 lead over the Gorillas and a sweep by the Lions' softball team tomorrow night at PSU will secure the Sonic Trophy for the Lions.
