Lions take the rain-shortened finale of the series with Northwest Missouri, 1-0

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Lions picked up a 1-0 win in a rain-shortened finale of the series against Northwest Missouri at Joe Becker.

The Lions (8-5, 4-4 MIAA) scored their only run when Patrick Deao came home on a sacrifice fly from Jesse Kinzey. Deao had started the inning with a double and was moved to third by a sacrifice bunt from Harrison Gerber.

Ryan Wheat started for the Lions and allowed just two hits in the shutout, striking out six and walking none. Cullen Baxter was 2-2 in the game.

Southern led 1-0 going into the sixth inning when Northwest scored a run, but rain came in and the game was delayed twice and eventually called, reverting back to the final complete inning in which the Lions led 1-0.

The Lions will be back in action this week, with a Tuesday double-header at Pittsburg State. First pitch will begin at 3 pm as the two teams will square off in their Sonic Trophy Series games.
