Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball
team split an MIAA double-header today with Washburn University,
dropping the first game 3-2, but rebounding to take out the
Ichabods 13-3 in eight innings in game two.
Southern (9-16, 7-11 MIAA) also announced that the scheduled
double-header for tomorrow with Washburn has been postponed to
Sunday at noon due to expected heavy rain on Saturday.
Washburn got on top first in game one as the Ichabods (12-6,
11-5 MIAA) scored a run in the third when Travis Cruz grounded out
to second, scoring Dane Simoneau.
The Lions answered back with a run in the fourth when Joe
Lincoln doubled to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a fly
out from Shayne Hoke and scored on a sacrifice fly from Michael
Zurmehly.
Washburn scored another run in the fifth and the Lions added a
run in their half of the inning on an RBI single from Zach
Caldwell.
The Ichabods then added the go-ahead run in the top of the
seventh on an RBI double from Simoneau.
Kevin Humphrey started for the Lions and went six and a third
innings, allowing three runs and striking out four, while walking
just one. Seven Lions had a hit, while Caldwell and Zurmehly drove
in a run each.
Washburn again scored first in game two when the Ichabods took a
1-0 lead after a home run from Camero Kasel. The Lions tied it up
in the fourth with a homer from Caldwell, but Washburn went ahead
2-1 after an RBI single from Cruz.
Southern then broke it open in the with nine runs as the Lions
sent 15 hitters to the plate and scored nine runs in the process.
Skyler Rawlins started the inning off with a walk and after a fly
out from Fernando Lugo, the next eight batters reached and scored
as Rawlins scored twice in the inning and drove in two.
Zurmehly added a monster blast in the seventh and Rawlins had a
two RBI double in the eighth to force the run rule.
Rawlins went 2-4 with two runs and four RBIs, while Zurmehly was
2-2 with a run and three RBIs. Jacob Taylor went 3-5, while
Caldwell and Lincoln drove in two each.
Carter Lance started and went six innings, allowing just one
earned run, while striking out four and walking one. Zak Porath and
Tyler Jinks pitched an inning each in relief.
The Lions and Ichabods will wrap up the weekend series with a
double-header at noon on Sunday at Joe Becker Stadium.
