Joplin, Mo. -- Michelle Dimza received a pass
in a crowd from Jentri White and turned and launched a shot into
the net to lead the Missouri Southern Lions to a dramatic, 2-1
overtime win over the Rockhurst Hawks in their 2009 home opener at
Fred Hughes Stadium. The match was moved from Hal Bodon Field
to Hughes Stadium due to a rain-soaked Bodon Field.
The goal was the first of the career for Dimza.
The Lions were forced to play catch-up from nearly the beginning
after Erin Valenta took a center pass from Abby Davidson and scored
from 20 yards away just 26 seconds into the match.
Sarah Evers tied the score at 1-1 by getting free on a breakaway
in the 32nd minute of the first half.
Goalkeeper Randi Russell recorded eight saves and was a big
reason why the Lions (1-2) were able to limit the Hawks (1-1) to
only one goal despite being out-shot 18-12 overall and 9-5 on-goal.
Alyssa Miller made three saves for the Hawks.
White recorded a team-best four shots for the Lions, while
Valenta led everybody with five shot-attempts.
The Lions will wrap-up non-conference action by hosting St.
Mary's (Texas) on Monday afternoon (Sept. 7). The match is
slated for noon at Hal Bodon Field.
