Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program honored their two seniors Tori Frazier and Kristen Wade today inside the Pat Lipira Softball Complex as the Lions fell to #4 Central Oklahoma 6-1 and 4-0 but qualified for the MIAA Tournemant.
For a second year in a row the Lions (26-23, 14-12 MIAA) will be heading to Edmond, Okla. for the MIAA Tournament this time as the six seed where they will take on Rogers State the three seed at 4:00pm from the Broncho Softball Stadium.
In today's first game against UCO (44-8, 23-3 MIAA) the Bronchos got out to a 3-0 lead in the second, the Lions got the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning but could not score anyone. UCO scored a further two runs in the third but back-to-back singles by Yazmin Vargas and Ashlynn Williams put runners on first and second to set up Vargas to score latter on in the inning cutting the defict to 5-1.
A scoreless fourth for both teams was followed by UCO putting the last run across in the fifth and in the sixth and seventh the Bronchos pulled off plays defensively to keep the Lions at bay and win 6-1.
Ashlynn Williams went 2-for-3 while Adrianna Yonug also had two hits, Yazmin Vargas scored the lone run and Josie Tofpi pick up the RBI.
Game two began with the Bronchos scoring a run in the first and second innings for the early 2-0 lead. Kara Amos started off the fourth with a single up the middle, a Josie Tofpi singled to center to moved Jenelle Lundien over to second and a Kristen Wade single advanced Tofpi to third but Lundien was tagged out at the plate.
UCO got a run in the sixth and seventh innings for the final score of 4-0.
For the game Tofpi, Wade and Amos collected hits while Amos also pitched a shutout inning in relief.
With the regular season over the Lions will finished above .500 in the regular season for the third year in a row while also being above .500 in MIAA play for the second year in a row, this is the fifth time since 2000 that the Lions will have finished above .500 overall and in conference action and the first time in back-to-back years since 2000-02.
Up next will be Rogers State in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday March 4th. The Lions and Hillcats met up last year in the MIAA Tournament with the Hillcats eliminating Southern and advancing to the Championship game. First pitch from the Broncho Softball Stadium is set for 4:00pm approximately.
