Topeka, Kan. – The Missouri Southern softball program fell to Washburn on the road this evening 5-4 and 11-3 inside Gahnstrom Field.
The Lions (22-17, 10-6 MIAA) and Ichabods (34-11, 16-2 MIAA) engaged in a pitcher's duel until the fifth inning. In the fifth the Lions got two runs across as
Abby DeSanto got on base with a double before reaching third base off a
Kara Amos single and later stole second in the next at bat.
Izzy Medrano ran for Amos and would score after stealing second and touched home plate after a
Sidnie Hurst pinch hit double.
Southern kept Washburn from getting a runner into scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, falling down in order in the sixth. The Lions scored two runs in the top half of the seventh as a
Grace Parrott double scored Amos and Young hit a sacrifice fly scoring
Kristen Wade. Washburn scored five in the seventh to snatch the game away.
Game one saw
Adrianna Young,
Grace Parrott and
Sidnie Hurst pick up a RBI, and
Kara Amos struck out six Ichabods.
Game two began with two scoreless innings before the Ichabods scored three runs in the third to begin the scoring.
Leighton Withers picked up two RBIs off a sacrifice fly to right field scoring
Adrianna Young and
Yazmin Vargas making it 3-2 heading to the bottom half of the fifth inning. In the bottom half of the fifth inning Washburn scored four runs to make it 7-2.
Sidnie Hurst for the second time today picked up a pinch hit RBI this time singling home
Kara Amos to make it 7-3. Washburn scored four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning for the final score line of 11-3.
Withers collected two RBIs and Hurst picked up an RBI as well,
Adrianna Young,
Yazmin Vargas and
Kristen Wade each had two hits in the game.
Bailey Lacy fanned five Ichabods from the circle.
Up next for the Lions is Emporia State tomorrow at Trusler Sports Complex at 1:00 and 3:00pm approximately to conclude the weekend road trip.
