Maryville, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program wrapped up the Fairfield Classic with losses to Winona State (7-1) and Concordia – St. Paul (9-7) today.
The Lions (15-11, 3-1 MIAA) faced off with Winona State (14-7) first and the game got off to a quick start. The Warriors got a run in the first inning and added another in the second to lead 2-0 after two. Both teams were shut out in the third before the Lions cut the lead in half on a

Both teams were scoreless in the fifth inning before Winona State scored five runs in the sixth inning to secure the 7-1 win. In the game Withers finished 2-for-3 while Tofpi,
Izzy Medrano,
Kristen Wade and
Sidnie Hurst picked up a hit as well.
Game two saw the Lions face off with Concordia – St. Paul (16-2-1) in a back-and-forth game. CSP scored one in the first before the Lions responded with
Yazmin Vargas hitting a leadoff home run for her first in her career. In the second inning the Golden Bears got a three-run home run for a 4-1 but an
Abby DeSanto pinch hit single scored
Kristen Wade to make it 4-2 after two complete.
Southern blanked CSP in the third before back-to-back home runs by
Josie Tofpi and
Leighton Withers to tie it up 4-4. In the fourth inning both teams went three up and three down before the Lions scored three runs in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.
A two run home run by the Golden Bears cut the Southern lead to one (7-6) with the score line staying that until the seventh inning. In the final frame CSP got three runs to take a 9-7 lead heading to the bottom half. Tofpi began the seventh off for the Lions with a single before Withers drew a walk and force a pitching change, with two outs Tofpi and Withers advanced up a base following a wild pitch and a
Kristen Wade walk loaded the bases. A run down by CSP got the final out to secure the comeback win with the bases loaded.
In the game
Yazmin Vargas went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Tofpi also went 2-for-4 and along with Vargas and Withers hit a home run.
Up next for the Lions is #21 Minnesota State at home inside the Pat Lipira Softball Complex tomorrow with game times moved up to 10:00am and 12:00pm (noon) to try and beat the rain that is forecasted for the Joplin area.
