Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program lost a pitcher's duel 1-0 against Maryville tonight to close the first day of the Teri Mathis Zenner (TMZ) Memorial Tournament held at the Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
The Lions (5-7) were led by the arm of
Kara Amos pitching seven innings with three strikeouts while issuing out only one walk, while also adding a hit as well. Maryville (4-6) got the only run of the game in first inning after beginning the game off with a triple the Lions got two outs before a single scored the Saints leadoff hitter.
In the bottom half of the first inning
Yazmin Vargas forced a fielding error by the Maryville pitcher before the Saints ended the inning with a double play. The Lions took care of the Saint in the top half of the second inning going down in order before an Amos single and walks by
Kristen Wade and
Adrianna Young made it bases loaded with two outs, forcing a Maryville pitching change that then saw the Lions end the inning with no runs scored.
The Lions got a runner on the base paths in the sixth and seventh inning but the Saints shut the door each time to preserve the 1-0 advantage.
Southern will close out the Teri Mathis Zenner (TMZ) Memorial Tournament tomorrow with a double-header against Northern State with first pitch times at 2:00 and 4:00pm approximately.
