Softball Wins And Ties Against RiverHawks

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern softball program won game one against the visiting Northeastern State RiverHawks 4-3 before tying game two 3-3 and being forced to not complete the game due to inclement weather and deterioration of the playing field.

Southern (16-11-1, 7-4-1 MIAA) grabbed the lead early as an Adrianna Young singled scored Josie Tofpi, and a delayed steal home by Leighton Withers later in the inning made it 2-0 after one complete.

Northeastern State (19-12-1, 7-6-1 MIAA) responded in the third inning with two runs of their own before the Lions reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning of a passed ball that scored Yazmin Vargas. Again, the RiverHawks tied it up this time in the sixth, shutting out the Lions in the bottom half to head into the seventh inning.

Bailey Lacy struck out all three RiverHawks in the seventh, Vargas started the inning off by reaching base from a fielding error at first base before getting onto second base from a Makaila Leonhart sacrifice bunt. With two outs Young hit a walk-off single to right field scoring Vargas as the Lions won 4-3.

Vargas finished 2-of-4 with two runs scored, and Young went 3-of-4 with two RBIs. Lacy picked up her fifth win of the season pitching in relief, striking out the last three batters she faced.

Game two saw the RiverHawks scored a run in the first three innings before the Lions got on the board in the fourth inning. Kara Amos hit a single to right-center scoring Young and Withers, after four complete inning Northeastern State held onto a 3-2 lead.

Tofpi tied it up in the fifth singling home Vargas as the final was 3-3. In the sixth inning, the Lions were up to bat when a Lightning delay stopped the game with one out in the inning. After attempting to wait out the weather it was decided to end the game as field conditions worsened and a tie was announced. This is the first tie in coach Hallie Blackney's career.

Next up for Southern is a home doubleheader against #22 Rogers State tomorrow. The first pitch is set for 3 pm from the Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
