Lions Fall in Two at Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan.—The Missouri Southern State University Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Emporia State, 9-1 and 4-2, on Saturday.

The Lions, who are now 11-9 overall, are 1-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association action. The Hornets improved to 15-8 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA.

Erika Lutgen opened the scoring on the day in the top of the first with a double down the right field line to push Josie Tofpi across from second base. The Hornets rattled off nine unanswered runs to win in five innings.

Offensively, the Lions had four hits including doubles by Lutgen and Elizabeth Windsor.

Abby Atkin was tabbed with the loss as she gave up two runs on 1.1 innings in her start.

The Lions took an early lead to start the second game with a Tofpi single up the middle scoring Windsor in the first inning. Trailing 4-1 entering the top of the fourth, Emily Harris closed the gap with an RBI single through the left side that allowed Lynnlee Parrott to score.

Natalie Hamm was tabbed with the loss as she tossed three innings before Atkin came in with three shutout innings of relief. Southern had three hits in the game.

The Lions return home next Friday (Mar. 13) and Saturday (Mar. 14) for MIAA doubleheaders with Newman University and the University of Central Oklahoma.
